@timschlomi GUIs, computers, applications, books, and physical metaphors are ergonomic to us, then AI would have the same success. The problem isn't a lack of intelligence, it's a lack of an ergonomic representation. We are coercing our human reality onto a digital reality. But that is...

@timschlomi That's if you are willing to train the smart person. Work with them to set up their development environment. Point them to resources. Explain the problem and the success criteria. If AI has access to the same level of resources in a manner ergonomic to it, the same way...

Scaling laws will never allow AI to forget culture plates over the holidays and see the effect of penicillin like Fleming did. AI will supercharge the ability for humans to make discoveries. But AI left on its own lives in a nonexistent fairy land. Humans and data give it power

@timschlomi , you can make a rock lighter or safer for kids (rubber rock). But you can't make a generally better rock. Like it's a rock. It doesn't make sense to say, OMG look we made a better rock. It's a rock. Rocks are the best at being rocks. Humans are the best at being humans.

@timschlomi able to make an app (like a human). Then your definition is just asking AI to be a better human. But you can't make a better human. It's like trying to make a better rock. You can make a harder or shinier rock (gemstone), you can make a rock better for construction (concrete)...

@timschlomi I think you alluded to it earlier when you said that my definition is too narrow. But when you allow a definition of AGI to include instructions for interacting with the physical world (like a human), to be able to write a novel with interesting stories (to a human), to be...

@timschlomi That's not intelligence, that's familiarity with the physical world. AI would do much better at giving instructions for creating a Dungeons and Dragons character.

@timschlomi Non-fiction book writing requires sourcing, journalism, and general leg work that is not intelligence. Fiction book writing requires lived experiences that is not intelligence. Pure “literary skill” — emphasis on the scare quotes, AI is very good at, e.g. Shakespeares sonnets.

@timschlomi AI is very good at math. We have alphageometry. Theorem proving is just hard, most people struggle enormously, AI performs appropriately and gets the basics

@timschlomi AI is very good at coding and is better than anyone with < 100 hours of experience in any stack (given appropriate documentation on the internet). The best competitive programers at cognition believe that they have made a programmer that is generally very strong.
