@timschlomi I agree that AIs don’t dominate humans cognitively. I think that across all tasks AI does roughly human-level which is why I say that it is generally intelligent. If you restrict cognitive tasks to only include tasks where humans exclusively do well and if you restrict the…

@timschlomi And can be done with a computer… namely computing! Which used to be done by hand. By that metric, computers have already replaced humans at trillions and trillions and trillions of economically useful tasks.

@timschlomi I disagree with the premise that there are economically useful tasks that can be performed only with access to the computer. Most of those jobs if they exist at all are transitory, waiting to be automated away. There is a whole history of jobs that are economically useful…

@timschlomi AI can be generally intelligent without being economically useful. People can be generally intelligent without being economically useful (laziness, procrastination, being a student and tweeting all the time. Physical strength and databases are economically useful.

@timschlomi I mean your argument can't possibly be that current AI is not AGI because of some factor which is not possible for me to describe? I also agree about caring about economically useful tasks above benchmarks. But, you are equating intelligence with being economically useful...

@timschlomi Most of the tasks that people (mistakenly) imagine AI to be better at than humans would require AI to be a "better human" at something than humans. More of a general criticism, given we aren't talking about a specific job that AI can't do rn that prevents AI from being AGI

@timschlomi Yes, so obviously AI is not a threat. It cannot reason properly about the physical world.

@timschlomi If you give a list of skills or subjects (contracts law, movie trivia, transcribing text, translation,) and you rank GPT4 versus a specific human on the entire list. GPT4 beats that specific human on 99% of the tasks -- handedly.

@timschlomi Lived experiences give something interesting to what they have to say, otherwise it's just slop. "There's no alpha". If you look at the biographies of fiction authors, they always best write about something they know. Off the top of my head you have Vonnegut, Steinbeck, ACDoyle

@timschlomi not a mark against AI's general intelligence. If we were to allow these "ergonomic" factors to factor into our AGI, then AGI is clearly along way off. AGI is a long way from sewing clothes AND planting fields AND running miles AND coding AND social communication, etc.
