FWIW, I'm not taking a position on either. It just strikes me as Utilitarian (in practice) means rationalizing your intuitions. Which BTW, is what I think about AI x-risk, and also what Singer thinks about EA people obsessing over weirdly-justified, long-term AI x-risk.

Yet he firmly holds those views. Utilitarianism already gives up any kind of moral absolutism, and the Utilitarian scales in both situations seems impossible to balance, especially if you are to take opposing sides.

Listening to Tyler Cowen interview Peter Singer. Singer rationalizes pro-Abortion and anti-Factory Farming stances with utilitarianism. What strikes me is that he has opposing intuition -- unborn babies are net positive, factory animals are net negative -- with no basis in fact.
